Kalighat paintings mark the birth of the contemporary art movement in India. They emerged in the second half of the 19th century in the bazaars of the Kalighat temple in Calcutta, India. Somewhere between the traditional practices of narrative scroll painting, the molding of clay figures, the introduction of watercolors and the exposure to western academic shading, the Kalighat artists evolved a language of illusion of the third dimension. This exhibit displays both older works and works by the few remaining artists of this genre who are based in Calcutta, India.

Indian art is a metaphor of a deeply spiritual and sensual culture. It comprises various schools, genres, folk traditions and modern day fusions. Of these the Kalighat genre is one of the most popular genres today. This exhibit has been curated by Monsoon art which is dedicated to promoting Indian art and artists. Monsoon art is driven by a desire to take Indian art from the confines of a few museums to a wider audience. It is being held at Kalart Gallery which is at the forefront of exhibiting diverse artwork.
